Greenways Primary School

Trips & Residentials

Greenways Out and About!

Here at Greenways we have developed a comprehensive programme of school trips and residentials. We understand that children's learning is enhanced when they are immersed in experiences and the learning that happens outside of the classroom significantly develops the 'whole' child.

Across the school, we aim to provide the children with visitors to the school, for example Egyptian storytellers in Year 3. This includes termly opportunities for parents to join in with their children's learning in school. There is no fee for these experiences and any costs incurred are paid through the school's curriculum budget.

Each term we also aim to make regular, local visits. We try to maximise areas of interest within our local vicinity/walking distance. Classes frequently make use of the beach and the local parks as well as visiting the local post box, library and shops. Again these experiences rarely cost any money although sometimes it is nice to buy an ice cream at the beach!

Every year group has the opportunity to make 'regional' visits. These are planned to maximise curriculum links but at an age-appropriate level, e.g. Marsh Farm for Early Years children and somewhere further afield like Chessington World of Adventures in Year 5. We always hire coaches with lap belts.

Over the years we have developed a programme of residential experiences starting in Year 1 with a late stay at school building up to a school week in Manchester/ Liverpool in Year 6. Our aim is to develop the children's confidence year on year by giving them opportunities to stay away from home in gradually less familiar settings for increasing periods of time. We closely evaluate these trips in terms of expense and value for money along with the appropriateness for the age and experience of the children. This means that each year there may be slight changes from the previous year.

As the children get older and the experiences on offer become more comprehensive there is an increasing financial demand on families, particularly those that have more than one child in the school. With this in mind, we try to make sure that if there is an expensive residential trip then the costs of other trips across the year are kept as low as possible. We aim to give families as much notice as possible of the trips and are very flexible with the payments. We offer a payment card system and with ParentMail families can pay off any amounts as frequently as they want. We are happy for families to increase the payment period and ask that you talk to someone in the Office so that we can arrange this with you. The school uses the Pupil Premium Grant to fund trips for children eligible for free school meals or those who have been eligible in the past 6 years.

In addition to these opportunities, different groups in school have other opportunities for different experiences, e.g. the Y5 and 6 choir are invited to join the French music trip to the Picardie region on a 4-night trip.

The table below outlines approximate costings of trips we've undertaken of the past few years.  Please note that these are subject to change due to changing financial climate:
